On 22 January 2025, the Council of Ministers approved the establishment of a National AI Taskforce. Its mandate will be to submit suggestions and recommendations to the President of the Republic via the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy on, inter alia, the following: national AI strategy, the sectors where AI would be useful in practice, the broader and more effective use of AI for maximising the public sector’s efficiency, monitoring AI developments, and developing research and innovation in this area.
The taskforce will be headed by the Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation and Technology and comprise people with specialised knowledge and experience in the field of AI. Their tenure will be for five years.
The Council of Ministers also approved the following national competent authorities to supervise and enforce the provisions of the AI Act:
1. The Commissioner of Communications, as the Notifying Authority and Market Surveillance Authority, to act as the Single Point of Contact for the AI Act.
2. The Commissioner for the Protection of Personal Data as the Market Surveillance Authority for matters related to her areas of competence.
